What are Flue Pipes and Flues?
Flue or a flue pipe is an item which can be used as part of a flue system when flue pipes are fitted together and used on an appliance to remove harmful, unwanted exhaust gases from an appliance such as a stove, wood burner, boiler, pizza oven to the outside. The high temperatures generated from these appliances and the flue route being taken will determine the type of flue required to ensure the flue system is safe and the distance to combustible materials is adhered to. It is also important that the flue system follows HETAS and Building Regulation guidelines.
A Stove pipe is a single wall flue pipe usually referred to for the initial part of a flue system which is immediately coming out of the stove used to connect to the rest of the chimney system. This type of flue pipe is usually made from vitreous enamelled stainless steel flue or 1mm think stainless steel single wall flue. This single wall flue has a distance to combustible materials of three times the diameter of the flue e.g. a 5 inch flue must be kept 15 inches away from combustible materials.
Twin wall flue pipe is a type of flue that has been manufactured with a double wall of stainless steel with high density rockwool insulation in-between which allows the removal of high temperature flue gases and is often used on stoves and log burners when there is no existing masonry chimney stack. The twin wall flue pipes are fitted together to form a continuous free standing flue system and connected to the wood burner or stove pipe with an adaptor and can run through the inside or outside of a house, bungalow or various types of buildings and spaces. The flue pipes come in various diameter sizes and they are made in various flue pipe lengths along with elbows, tees flue supports and flue cowls to terminate and complete the flue system. Twin wall flue comes in plain silver stainless steel finish or black which has been powder coated. A combination of single wall flue pipe at the start of the flue run and then incorporating twin wall flue pipes for the main part of the flue run is often used.
